I’m trying to teach myself everything I can about gaming. It’s a great way to just have alota fun. However, you even have to be a semi-geek just to indulge in playing a game. "Expansion packs", "mods", .How do I apply them? I’ve got a bunch of games that either freeze-up, crash, or won’t work at all. I meet the recommended requirements. Even the so called troubleshooting guide and readme doesn’t help unless your an advanced comp user. PC For Dummies doesn’t go into it. I’m no rocket scientist, but I’m not a total dork either.Teens seem to be born with this knowledge and will even roll their eyes at your ignorance. I need a good book that a normal (?) person can understand. In the meantime tho, back to the orig question…expansion pack….what is it and how do I use it. Is it just a sequal or what? I have a "high end" comp & a "low end brain". AMD 64×2, 2GB RAM, $$ Graphic Card, etc.,etc.

An expansion pack adds missions or levels on to a game that you already have. It usually has other benefits as well like new weapons and added features.
To solve the crashing problem you need to look for patches

Look at it this way. an expansion pack in it self is not a new game consider it one huge patch that give you new areas new weapons new bosses stuff like that. for the most part expansions can either be stand alone. wich means it dosnt need the original game installed. lik edisciples 2 and all the stand alone expansions, that can be installed and not have to have the previous game installed.
mods on the other hand can be numores things. alot of ppl will use mods because they change some graphic detail. sounds simple things. but some mods are for ppl who like to hack and is frowned upon by just about everyone i know.

Probably give you more scenarios, weps equip etc. i play EQ, nine expansions, i think maybe 11.
sure is good to have the young ones around isn’t it? think about it, teenager, 12-19. nineteen was born in eighty seven. and 12? that was like yesterday to me. concidering they learn a lot before they can even talk, it is like they’re born with the knowledge.
you get the expansion, you install it. if the game is any good they do everything else for you except you may need to learn new stuff.

While I can’t exactly help you with the PC book problem, I can answer the original question. An expansion pack can be used as a sort of sequel, or used to add more levels, weapons, etc to the existing product. But the point is, you need to have the original game first, and it will add on to that and use the original game’s coding and data to add to the pre-existing game and expansion packs. If you need any more help, though, as someone else, because my graphics card sucks, so I don’t have very many computer games.

From my knowledge, EXPANSION PACKS are the counterpart of UPDATES and UPGRADES in online gming. These improve playing quality and introduces something new to the player. MODS, or "modifications" are codes that modify playing to the user’s prospective.
In short:
EXPANSION PACKS= Update, upgrade
MODS= HACKS, CHEAT CODES, GATEWAY TO CHEATING

An Expansion pack is just like a sequel to primitively describe it. It’s a continued story of the last one.

Exspansion pcks ad more content to games, i.e. weapons, levels, enemys etc. sometimes the continue the story sometimes they jsut ad crap. and to use them you just installt hem like you would a normal game. if you have the original (which you uust for exspansion packs) then it will see it and jsut slap itsself on rihgt ontop of it. and for games the crash and freeze up. make sure you ahve the latest drivers for video card etc adn the latest patches for your games
